GLSP offers summer associates challenging experiences and opportunities working alongside GLSP lawyers and paralegals. Summer associates receive eye-opening and mind-opening experiences in the field, helping real people with critical problems, and for many, seeing rural Georgia and rural poverty for the first time. “I worked on projects related to housing, the environment, family law, and community economic development. I gained terrific practical experiences, which I believe will help me in my final year of law school.” — C.H., Mercer University School of Law
Business Law for Grassroots Non-Profit Organizations
The summer associate will work with a GLSP attorney representing grassroots community-based organizational clients that are working to develop affordable housing, create better communities, and establish viable small businesses in culturally diverse and economically depressed areas of Georgia outside of Atlanta. The student will assist in providing non-litigation legal counseling about aspects of forming an organization, developing a board of directors, strategic planning, negotiating with partners, and more. The organizations typically have problems that involve real estate, corporate, employment, land use, tax, governmental housing finance, and even banking law. The student will have a unique opportunity to address the causes of poverty and not just the crises of poverty. The student will be based in a GLSP office but will travel to other parts of the state to work with clients.
