GLSP's Family Violence Cases Empower Survivors
Ms. Laurie Adams is a young mother of an infant daughter. The father of their newborn is physically and emotionally abusive to both mother and child. On one occasion, the father hit and shoved Ms. Adams while she was holding their daughter. He then confined them to one room of the house for a week, refusing to let Ms. Adams have any contact with the outside world. While confined, Ms. Adams was beaten frequently. After six days, Ms. Adams was able to obtain a cell phone and contact her parents for help. When her parents arrived, the abuser's family members attacked them and the abuser refused to let Ms. Adams take their daughter. Only when the police arrived was Ms. Adams able to leave with her parents and her daughter. Ms. Adams sought help from GLSP. A GLSP lawyer obtained a 12-month temporary protective order with child support for Ms. Adams. The attorney also offered Ms. Adams advice and direction concerning financial and physical security issues. Lack of available childcare, few job opportunities, inadequate transportation, distance from shelters and services, and poverty and economic dependence are just some of the barriers that GLSP's advocacy helps women in rural areas overcome to escape from violent relationships. Economic stability is a key to permanent separation from an abuser. (Client stories are used with permission. Photographs and names do not necessarily represent actual clients.)
