. . . until she found a lawyer.
Elisa has diabetes and needs insulin daily. Her mother works in a low-wage job and has two other children to support. The children qualify for Medicaid but when their mother went to the drugstore she could not fill the insulin prescription. The pharmacist had no record of their name in the Medicaid records on his computer.
Elisa’s mother contacted the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) for help. Her lawyer noticed that the family uses two surnames, as do many Latino families. It became clear that Medicaid was using one of Elisa’s surnames while the pharmacist was using the other, and thereafter the red tape was unraveled. Without the assistance of the lawyer, Elisa might never have gotten her insulin. |
